Obey God’s Word

As an evangelist, this story here fascinates me and goes against most views on traditional evangelism.  Listening to the experts who have been to seminary, the norm was to fish when fish is ripe and ready, mainly at night or in dark times, and avoid a crowd as it will chase the fish away. Simon Peter was quite sure he knew more about fishing than Jesus did. But he was about to be pleasantly surprised.

Andrew introduced Peter to Jesus. And Peter had seen how Jesus healed his mother-in-law from a high fever. Yet, he was not fully convinced by Jesus, so he continued fishing.

Scripture says one day Jesus used Simon Peter’s boat to speak to the crowd. Later Jesus told Simon to row out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch. Simon likely thought, "That's a dumb thing to do. The night is the best time for fishing!" But after explaining that they'd fished all night and caught nothing, he muttered, "Because if you say so ..." and obeyed. What an awesome result! They caught so many fish that the nets began to break.

Today we can learn important lessons from Simon Peter’s encounter with Christ in Luke 5:1—5. Fishing/evangelism is all about faith in Jesus, reverence before him, dependence on his wisdom and power, and obedience to his word. His doubts about Christ were gone. The evidence was in the nets. Jesus had such amazing power that he had to be the Son of God! Peter’s sense of unworthiness in Jesus' presence brought him to his knees: "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!" But Jesus said, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men." So he left his boat and followed Jesus.

"Master, we've worked hard all night ... But because you say so, I will let down the nets." Luke 5:5

Let’s Pray

Yahweh, forgive my weak faith, superficial worship, and shoddy obedience. Father, deepen my awareness of your greatness and my dependence on you. God help me to look beyond my own self-reliance and become more reliant on you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
